breezy hill stables equestrian family session

I absolutely love every family, couple and individual I photograph. But, being able to capture my friends brings a different level of joy to what I do. It’s exciting to have the people that know me personally see my passion for photography and be delighted by the moments I capture for them. Holly + Steve are two of my husband and I’s closest friends. We all met back high school and I’ve been photographing their family since Holly was pregnant with their first son, Carter, now three years old. We’ve done sessions at their home featuring both boy’s nurseries and the family dog. However, we’ve never included Holly’s horses in the fun!

We headed out to Breezy Hill Stables in Thurmont, Maryland, where Holly boards her two horses. Holly has been riding since she was 14 and been with Breezy Hill since the day they opened at their original location in Emmitsburg. Her first horse, Billie, is 32 and the oldest horse on the farm. Holly bought him when she was 19 and participated in countless shows with him until he retired four years ago. Her second horse, Luke, is a rescue that’s “13-ish”. Both are incredibly loved. It was a treat to shoot the bond that Holly and her family shares with each of the horses.

When I first arrived at the stables early that morning I was greeted by a cute little barn kitty. As I was getting my equipment out of my car, she propped her front paws on my open trunk like she was ready to jump in. As I headed towards the barn, she walked right in front of me like she was my tour guide. She was the most adorable welcoming committee ever!

Holly prepped for the session perfectly! She texted me pictures of outfits for Carter and Lukie, 10-months, to ensure she was choosing looks that would photograph well.

Funny Story: Carter refers to his brother as “Lukie the Baby” and Holly’s horse as “Luke the Horse” to differentiate who he’s talking about in the sweetest little voice!

Holly even arranged for her mom to arrive at the stables an hour early to make sure Luke, the horse, was ready for his close-up! I’ve worked with horses during other types of sessions but never with toddlers. It was super helpful to have some extra hands. She stayed during our session and was the perfect assistant to keep both the horse’s attention and the boys smiling!

Holly + Steve, I had so much fun spending the morning with your family at the stables. I’m so glad we finally got to include your larger four legged family members in a session!
