an identical triplet lifestyle newborn session

Identical triplets! There’s upwards of a one in 200 million chance of having identical triplets naturally (without the help of fertility medication). Mandi + Jon are the lucky ones! In celebration of shooting the girls one-year session recently, I wanted to share with you our very first session together.  Meet their beautiful identical triplets, Katelyn Ann, Abigail Beth and Natalie Claire.

My husband and I know Jon from school. Over the years, we have grown closer with him and his wife Mandi through mutual friends. As Mandi’s due date was approaching, I proposed the idea of a newborn session since I knew it was probably the last thing on her mind at the time.

Like most multiples, Kate, Abby + Nattie were born premature, but healthy. As Mandi says, the most blessed thing about their birth was their health and getting to hold them all for the first time is still her most treasured memory.

 

After they were released from the NICU (check out their NICU graduation pictures below), I joined the whole family, including big brother Jake, at their home a few days later. I have photographed newborn twins before, but triplets were a first.I was so excited for the experience and to be able to capture such tender moments for this sweet family.

When I first arrived at Mandi + Jon’s home, Jake greeted me at the door, excited to show off his sissies. “See my sissies! One sissy, two sissy, three sissies!” Jake is such a loving big brother and just the sweetest, kindest little boy I’ve ever met. Kate, Abby + Nattie are so lucky to have him watching over them as they grow up.

Since there were three precious little girls to focus on, I made sure to bring an assistant with me. Having an extra set of hands to help change outfits, adjust positions and be ready with wipes and milk on hand was  such a big help. The girls were little superstars throughout the whole day, sleeping most of the time. We set up in the living room which had a full wall of windows on each side. Can you say heaven?!  They let in beautiful light creating the perfect setting. One of the shots for this session was even featured on The Bump!

I started the session focusing on capturing the whole family together. Taking note of each of their headband colors since they are identical, I captured each individually and with Mom and Dad next. I was even able to get a few shots of Jake with all of his sisters, a photo I know Mandi + Jon will love hanging in their home.

One of my favorite shots to date actually came from this session. While sitting on the couch, I had Mandi + Jon hold the girls on their laps. I went around behind the couch and photographed the girls from above. It’s such a special angle because that’s what Mandi + Jon see every day as they feed and care for their new baby girls. That angle, their sweet faces and the amazing light in the room put it at the top of my list.

 

Mandi + Jon, thank you for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph your beautiful little girls. They surely are triple the sweetness and I can’t wait to see them grow up. Knowing how awesome Jake is, Kate, Abby + Nattie are going to be nothing short of amazing.
