an under the sea lifestyle newborn session

Katie + Troy were referred to me by a current yearly Expressions’ client for their maternity photos (which you can see HERE). I loved working with them and was happy to get to do their newborn session with two-week-old baby girl Abigail as well.

When I got to Katie + Troy’s, big sis Caroline greeted me at the door, just like she had before. She yelled my name right away and immediately started telling me all about her new baby sister, her cat – Ava and all of the photos we were going to take. It’s good to see that Caroline still has all her energy and hasn’t been losing as much sleep as Mom and Dad!

Katie prepped Abigail, following my recommendations down to a T. She made sure she was nice and sleepy with a full belly and surrounded by a warm environment, absolute perfect conditions for a newborn session. Baby Abigail was more than I could have asked for and oh so perfect! In fact, she slept for about half our session and was such a doll!

Their kitchen window had fabulous light for getting some really sweet images of Abigail with Katie + Troy. The background was soft, faded and neutral. They will be able to put these photos anywhere in their house and will match seamlessly with their decor. Abigail was so happy and content lying in Katie’s arms. I was able to capture all her little features like, fingers, toes, lips and lashes right there.

As we moved outside to capture some photos of the whole family, Caroline had playtime on the brain. I put down my camera, grabbed Caroline’s hands and we took off spinning like “princesses”! After a minute or two, we ran back up to the house and snuck in a few family photos. We took another short play break for “jumping like frogs” and more princess spinning before finishing up.

It’s actually funny that I was switching up my photography plan this day because my sister just gave me a shirt for my birthday that reads “Newborn photography is my cardio”. It’s so true! It would have been perfect for this session! Katie even mentioned she can’t believe I have enough energy to play with Caroline after taking care of my own girls all day. Truthfully, I didn’t even know how to respond.

Growing up, when people would ask what I wanted to do when I grew up, the career would constantly change. However, I always knew I wanted to have as many babies as I could. I’ve always loved kids no matter the age. I especially LOVE to soak up the sweet little newness of newborns. Since Katie and I are both girl moms, it was easy to relate to what I was seeing unfold. I tried to ease the stress of a photoshoot going perfectly by taking mental notes to what each family member needed at that time and did my best to execute. Needless to say, I had a blast at Abigail’s newborn session.
