I met Colleen when she was about 16. She interned for a local photography studio I was managing and our owner had her work with me. I was able to get to know her on a professional level and after her internship she was hired on as one of our photographers. Colleen is now a CNA, but it was simply awesome to photograph someone that understands and appreciates photography as much as she does.
We got to shoot Colleen + Johnny’s engagement session at the milking farm where they met at one of their first jobs. Over the years, they have stayed in touch with the farmer, John, who graciously allowed us to shoot their engagement photos at the place where their love story began.
For their session, we did something a little unexpected and had Colleen in a dress and heels and Johnny, in a on-trend dress shirt and denim on a farm. John was a little worried about them getting covered in cow slop. But, it could not have turned out any better. I started our session where they actually milk the cows because of this perfect lighting coming through the doorway. I like to shoot couples through different types of actions, so I had Colleen + Johnny hugging and engage in little movements which allowed me to capture their true happiness.
Funny Story: When we were in the milking parlor, there was a row of cows close behind Colleen + Johnny. I noticed that the cow behind Johnny had it’s mouth open. It wasn’t close enough to bite him, but all of a sudden the cow coughed/sneezed and spit all over Johnny’s back! The slobber covered the back of Johnny’s head and shirt, but he was such a good sport about it.
The cows weren’t the only animals making their debut in our shoot! If you’ve ever been to a farm you know there are always barn kittens running around. Colleen noticed a couple of cute little kitties lying on a piece of fabric draped over a fan. She picked one up and asked me to take a photo. How could I resist? They were just so adorable! Then we actually turned it into something as I had Johnny hold one as well. I snagged some shots of them cradling these delicate babies and it was as if they were holding each other’s love in their hands. It could not have been sweeter!
It was such a fun session with Colleen + Johnny. They both rocked it! Normally, photoshoots are not guys favorite things to do on the weekends and sadly, sometimes that shows in photos. However, Johnny was so easy to photograph. You could tell how comfortable he was with himself and he knew how important these photos were to Colleen. She didn’t even have to remind him to take his wallet or phone out of his pocket! It’s like he was a pro!
Typically engagement shoots are more feminine and geared towards women. However, Johnny recently purchased his dream truck and we took this opportunity to shine a light on every guy’s favorite toy! He even went all the way to Texas to pick it up. That’s quite a trek from Pennsylvania! He pulled his newly purchased Ford in front of the barn to use as a perfect prop for some intimate photos of Colleen + Johnny cuddled in the truck bed wrapped in a blanket.
Colleen + Johnny, your engagement session was so fun and the perfect representation of you both! Thanks so much for allowing me to capture this milestone for you two! !
P.S. Colleen + Johnny are getting married today! Stay tuned in the coming weeks for shots from their big day.
