layered looks | style guide

I’ve mentioned it in passing during a couple of other blog posts, but one of the new things we’re implementing at Expressions is a style guide. Our clients frequently ask for tips on dressing for the camera. Whether they’re dressing their whole family, coordinating for an engagement session or prepping for a big milestone, everyone is always curious about the best thing to wear.

Last fall I began styling looks and shooting mini sessions to complete the guide. The full style guide will be sent to each Expressions client when they book a session. It cover everything you need to know to prep for our time together including style tips, location suggestions, things to consider when selecting a date and time and even a complete portrait session checklist.

Today I wanted to share a little bit of it with you and talk about the best thing to wear for cold weather sessions. Layered looks are perfect for adding visual interest to your images while keeping warm during the fall and winter.

Have you ever walked by a J.Crew store and noticed all the mannequins are wearing layers? These sweaters, vests and coats are adding dimension and style to every look. Adding a cable knit over a button up shirt or a blazer over a t-shirt can elevate your style without sacrificing comfort. Most importantly, these layers keep you warm during the cold months.

You don’t have to limit layers to winter though. Layered looks work well year round. Trust us, even if it’s warm outside, the layers are worth it to achieve stylish and classic images that will be with you for years to come.

Do you have a portrait session coming up? Let us know in the comments what you plan on wearing. Would you wear a layered look?
