Good things come to those that wait. Sweet baby Cole was born almost a full two weeks late but every moment spent anticipating his arrival was well worth it. At just four days old, he is the calmest baby I’ve ever had the honor of capturing in my 15 years as a photographer.
When I arrived, he was wide awake and ready for his close up. Throughout our whole session he was perfectly content letting me change his position to capture each of his tiny features in detail. In fact, I don’t think he cried once while I was there!
One of the things I love about shooting newborns is getting to see their little personalities start to develop. At just four days old, you can already tell that Cole is going to be a chill and easy going person. He’s even starting to develop habits like sleeping on his back with his head turned to the right. Mom, Erica, says he’s done this since the day he was born. Cole’s so comfortable in this position, he wouldn’t even let me turn his head the other direction.
From Erica: My favorite part of bringing home Cole, was seeing my daughters reaction for the first time. It melts my heart. She tries to be the best mama hen to her little brother every time she gets the chance. I was nervous bringing another baby into the world; wondering how she would react from being an only child to sharing everything; and now that he is here I can’t imagine our life without him. He is the most chill little guy ever and I couldn’t ask for a more perfect husband to raise our perfect children with.
At home, Cole joins big sister Kylie who adapted to big sister life almost instantly. She was such a natural and didn’t hesitate when I asked her if she wanted to hold him for a few minutes. Some of my favorite moments from the session are the two of them cuddled up together beside the couch. The natural light pouring in through the floor to ceiling living room windows highlighted the moment perfectly.
I love incorporating personal details into each of my sessions to give them more meaning and Cole’s session featured a special family heirloom. Dad, Mike, had a little yellow dump truck he use to play with as a child. His one request for the session was to get a few snaps of Cole swaddled in the bed. When I arrived at the house Mike was rinsing it off joking that it still had dirt on it from 1990! He got it cleaned up and Cole fit perfectly right in the back.
Erica + Mike, thank you for inviting me into your home to capture Cole. He is the calmest baby and spending the afternoon with him was such a delight. Kylie is a wonderful big sister and I can’t wait to see how their relationship and bond grows over the years.
